Technology @ North

Student Computers

There are currently over 500 computers on the North High campus that are accessible by students. Almost all of those are located in student classrooms that have been set up specifically for use as a computer lab. The classroom labs vary in size, but most are set up with 30 stations.

All of our student computers have what we call a standard image, which includes a baseline set of software applications. The main applications used by students here at North are Microsoft Office and Adobe's CS4 Master Collection.

There are also several labs that have custom applications such as AutoCAD 2010, Adobe CS4, Microsoft Office 2007, Quickbooks 2009, and 3ds Max.

Software List

Student computers at North High have a wide range of software applications installed. Many of those applications, such as Microsoft Office, Adobe CS4, AutoCAD, and 3ds Max are also used by the vast majority of today's design and technology professionals.

One of North High's main goals is to give students as much hands-on experience as possible using these applications, which will better prepare them for college and then eventually the work force.

Shared Computer Labs

North High currently has six computer labs available to all teachers, on a reservation basis. The lab schedule(s) are managed via North High's Intranet web site, which allows teachers to browse the various lab schedules, reserve labs for specific dates and times, and also cancel reservations if the need arises. The three labs are located next to the Media Center, in an area we call the "SuperLab".

The Media Center

The North High Media Center currently has 90 computers for student use. The computers are organized into three different lab areas, and can be used by teachers as part of a scheduled class, or by individual students who have permission to be in the MC.

The SuperLab

The SuperLab currently has 100 machines for student use. The lab is actually grouped in three smaller labs, which can be used independently or together as part of a larger presentation.

In addition to student workstations, each lab also contains individual teacher stations and network printers.

Although it is open to all teachers, the SuperLab is primarily reserved by Reading and English classes who work with TennBiz3000, a web-based, individualized reading and writing instruction solution that has been implemented district-wide.
