The Advanced International Certificate of Education program (AICE) is an innovative and accelerated method of academic study offered solely through the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), a division of the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England.

The AICE program and curriculum is overseen by the University of Cambridge, an institution consistently ranked as one of the top 5 academic universities in the world. It is a flexible, broad-based, two-year curriculum, which is offered worldwide at schools and colleges in over 150 countries. For over 170 years the prestigious University of Cambridge has been setting worldwide curriculum standards through their examinations.

AICE features courses written specifically as preparation for honors degree programs. It encourages high academic standards and provides an ideal basis for study at the college and university level.

The Cambridge program is divided into two categories:

What are the differences between AICE and IB?

Both the Cambridge AICE program and the International Baccalaureate program are advanced academic curriculum, with an established history and exemplary track record of success. AICE, however, does offer students more flexibility in class selection and timing for college.

A student must pass six AICE exams to earn the AICE diploma. Students are required to pass one exam from three categories: Mathematics/Sciences, Language, and Humanities. The other three classes may be from any category, so students can customize their schedules to target a specialized area of study that will better prepare them as they progress upwards to the university level and eventually, the workforce.

For example, a student wishing to study Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Sciences might schedule 4 Math/Science, 1 Language, and 1 Humanities for their AICE classes, while a student studying Criminology or Law might prefer 1 Math/Science, 1 Language, and 4 Humanities.

Another AICE advantage is the students ability to take AICE classes and exams at any stage in their high school career, starting in 9th grade. AICE students at North who take exams all four years are able to position themselves for an AICE diploma by the end of their junior year.

Having the AICE diploma on their resume when applying to colleges during the fall of their senior year helps students further differentiate them from other applicants who will not learn of their IB or AICE diploma status until the August after they graduate, when colleges have already chosen their freshmen applicants.

AICE Programs of Study

The North High AICE program offers eight different areas of focus, each one designed to prepare students for a seamless transition into post-secondary education:

Pre-AICE and AICE at North

The AICE program at North Fort Myers High School includes a pre-AICE program for freshmen and sophomores with advancement to AICE courses during the junior and senior years.

An AICE Diploma is awarded on the basis of examination scores and course work performance during six full-credit courses. By requiring students take a minimum of six full-credit courses with at least one course chosen from each of the three subject areas, the AICE Diploma ensures that all students follow a broad and balanced academic program.

Advanced (A) Level and Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level certificates listing subjects passed are issued to those students who do not earn the full diploma. Within this framework, AICE offers an extremely flexible curriculum which can be tailored to students’ interests, abilities, and future plans.

AICE Worldwide

American universities have responded enthusiastically to AICE. The Florida Legislature has identified AICE as a graduation option and acceleration mechanism through which high school students can be awarded up to 45 hours of college credit. Students earning the AICE Diploma qualify for the maximum Florida Bright Futures tuition scholarship and students completing the curriculum can earn the Florida Medallion Scholars Tuition Award.

Students who complete the AICE curriculum will be provided the best possible foundation for advanced post secondary studies anywhere in the world. North Fort Myers High School is proud to offer the AICE program in the United States.

About Cambridge AICE

The Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Diploma program is administered and assessed by University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), a not–for–profit department of the world renowned University of Cambridge in the UK. CIE offers a wide range of academic and vocational qualifications in more than 150 countries.

Cambridge AICE is an international pre–university curriculum and examination system, which emphasizes the value of broad and balanced study for academically able students. Its strengths lie in the flexibility and structure of the curriculum encouraging in–depth, working knowledge of each subject, and in essay–based examinations as assessment of that knowledge and skill mastery.

Cambridge AICE courses are equivalent to those offered at US university freshmen level or beyond. Routes to the Cambridge AICE Diploma are extremely flexible and offer students the opportunity to tailor their studies to their individual interests, abilities and future plans within an international curriculum framework.

The Cambridge AICE program was piloted and studied by the Florida Department of Education for four years in three Florida school districts and since 2001 has been approved for use in any Florida school district looking for an inexpensive, flexible advanced academic program for grades 11 and 12. In order to offer these and other CIE assessments schools must register with CIE as Examination Centers.
